この曲の作詞は、ジョン・オーデレー（またはオーデレー、1426年頃没・ハウモンド・アビー出身の、司祭、詩人）です。彼の作品のかなりの数が、オックスフォードのボードリアン図書館に納められています。彼が生きていた時代はまだプロテスタントもイギリス国教会も成立していない時代になりますので、カソリック時代の人の作品とも言えるのかもしれません。
